A former Launceston city councillor has returned to local government as one of two new members filling vacancies created by recent resignations.
Krista Preece, who served on the council from 2021 until losing her seat, has been elected to replace George Razay after his resignation to become a state MP.
Former media adviser Ross Marsden will take on the role left vacant by Andrea Dawkins earlier this month.
Both councillors were elected through recounts conducted by the Tasmanian Electoral Commission and will serve until the next local government elections in 2026.
Preece, who works in the emergency department at Launceston General Hospital, said she was eager to resume her advocacy work on issues close to her heart.
“I’m looking forward to picking up where I left off and advocating for issues I’m passionate about including homelessness, public safety, accessible transport and making Launceston a more pet-friendly city,” she said.
Marsden, who has three decades of media experience, has also been involved in Tasmania’s performing arts sector for 20 years and is currently President of the Theatre Council of Tasmania.
“I believe real change can be achieved at the local government level and I’m looking forward to working collaboratively with my fellow councillors and the Launceston community,” he said.
Mayor Matthew Garwood said the appointments would strengthen the council’s capability and community connections.
“Krista has already shown her deep commitment to our city through her previous service and we are delighted to see her return to the council table,” he said.
“Ross brings a wealth of experience in media, the arts, and public engagement and we look forward to the fresh perspective he will bring.”
Both are expected to be sworn in within a fortnight.
