Update – 4:30pm: Two women have been seriously injured and several interstate tourists have been hurt in a crash involving multiple vehicles on the Bass Highway near Deloraine.
The incident unfolded near Elizabeth Town on Monday afternoon, a stretch of road locals say is notorious for crashes
A p-plater in a white Volkswagen collided with a ute heading towards Deloraine.
Two women inside the Volkswagen were trapped in their mangled vehicle and had to wait for rescue crews to arrive to free them.
The driver of the ute, a woman in her 30s, was treated for minor injuries.
Five Victorian tourists in a separate vehicle swerved off the road to avoid the crash, with three of the five treated for minor injuries.
The Elizabeth Town-bound lane of the highway was closed for several hours while crash investigators combed the scene.
Police say investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing and are urging road users to drive responsibly.
Earlier: Two people are understood to be trapped after a multi-vehicle crash on the Bass Highway this afternoon.
The crash occurred near the Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm at Elizabeth Town shortly before midday.
Police say the highway is currently blocked, with traffic being diverted via Deloraine onto Mole Creek Road.
The extent of injuries is not yet known.
