Two walkers have been rescued from a Tasmanian wilderness track after becoming stranded without proper gear as night fell.

The pair, aged 30 and 28, raised the alarm shortly after 5pm yesterday on the Bluff River Gorge Track near Buckland.

With just 15% battery left on their phone and no maps or torches, they were quickly running out of options.

Tasmania Police sent in a ground search and rescue team, which found them several hours later.

“The pair was cold but were found safe and well and escorted from the track,” police said.

The incident has again highlighted concerns about bushwalkers heading into the wilderness without preparation.

Police are reminding walkers to carry basics such as maps, torches, waterproof clothing, food, water and an emergency communication device.

“Be prepared to turn back or change plans if severe weather is forecast or eventuates during the walk,” police said.

“Making the decision to push on when you should turn back can put you in danger.”
