The Historical Society of Evandale in Tasmania’s Northern Midlands wants to get rid of the electricity poles in their heritage town and replace them with underground power lines – similar to other Midlands towns.
The society believes that by removing the ‘ugly’ lines and installing underground power, it would ‘enhance the heritage aspects’ of the village, which is known for its Victorian and Georgian character homes.
With an estimated cost of around $1 million for a 600-metre area, the entire project could cost between $2-3 million to remove every pole from the historical precinct.
The project would involve removing the current power poles, connecting each house to the underground power system and replacing any infrastructure that would be disturbed, which the society say could be done across a 5-10 year period.
The society recently wrote to the Northern Midlands Council, asking them to consider the idea again and suggested that the State Government should contribute towards the cost of the project given the town’s significant tourism value.
