Hobart is set for an early taste of spring this week, with temperatures forecasted to reach up to seven degrees above average in the coming days.
As a high-pressure system currently centred over eastern Australia moves into the Tasman Sea on Monday, it will draw air from Australia’s interior southward in a mild northerly airstream.
Weatherzone forecasters describe this as “unseasonable warmth”, predicting the capital will reach a maximum of 20 degrees on Tuesday, well above the August average of 13.2 degrees.
“Often with warm August northerlies and northwesterlies, a strong cold front lurking in the Southern Ocean comes to bite afterwards, bringing a strong cold change,” Weatherzone said.
“At this stage, long-range models suggest that such a change is looming towards the end of next week, but it won’t arrive immediately after the warmest day.”
The forecast for the beginning of the week is mostly sunny with a low chance of rain on Monday and a slight chance of showers on Tuesday.
Temperatures will drop slightly on Wednesday to a maximum of 18 degrees with a medium chance of showers, followed by a maximum of 16 degrees on Thursday and Friday with a similar chance of showers.
Friendly Beaches, on the state’s east coast, currently holds the highest temperature of the month, recording 19.5 degrees on Saturday.
The coldest place so far this month has been Liawenee, which recorded -4.5 degrees on August 1 and a chilling -13.5 degrees in July.
