Vandals desecrate Brighton cemetery with vehicle burnouts

Updated – 3:50pm, Monday: Police have spoken to a 26-year-old man from Queenstown in relation to the damage.

He will be proceeded against by summons for damage to property.

Earlier: Police are hunting for the vandals who allegedly drove a 4×4 vehicle through a Brighton cemetery, damaging multiple graves and headstones over the weekend.

The incident occurred within the grounds of St Matthew’s Catholic Church near Pontville between Friday night and Saturday morning, leaving seven headstones and pillar blocks run down and damaged.

Investigators believe a vehicle entered the cemetery from the Jordan Downs Drive entrance before conducting burnouts across the grass area.

The damage has left family members of those buried at the site distressed, with some graves believed to date back many decades.

Tyre marks were clearly visible across sections of the cemetery, with evidence suggesting the vehicle was a four-wheel drive.

Police are appealing for anyone with information about suspicious activity near the cemetery on Friday night or early Saturday morning to come forward.
