Tennis legend Venus Williams will make her first appearance at the Hobart International this month, joining what organisers are calling the strongest women’s field in the tournament’s 31-year history.

The former world No.1 and seven-time Grand Slam singles champion has been confirmed as the first main-draw wildcard for the event, which begins on 12 January at the Domain Tennis Centre.

“I’m excited to be back in Australia and looking forward to competing in Hobart this summer,” Williams said.

The American star, who will begin her 33rd WTA tour season at the event, joins an impressive lineup featuring US Open 2021 champion Emma Raducanu, Wimbledon 2024 and Roland Garros 2021 champion Barbora Krejčíková, two-time Hobart champion Elise Mertens and defending champion McCartney Kessler.

The tournament begins on January 12 at the Domain Tennis Centre

Tournament Director Darren Sturgess said Williams’ participation highlighted Hobart’s growing importance on the global tennis calendar.

“We are thrilled to have Venus Williams choose to start her 33rd WTA tour season in Australia, right here at the Hobart International, ahead of competing at the Australian Open,” Sturgess said.

Main tournament matches will run until January 17 in Hobart

“Every player named in our field this year will compete at the Australian Open, reinforcing Hobart’s place as an important stop on the global tennis tour.”

The tournament has attracted 22 top players so far, including world No.20 Elise Mertens, No.29 Emma Raducanu and No.31 McCartney Kessler.
