An 18-year-old Victorian has celebrated his milestone birthday by trying his namesake beer for the first time.
James Boag made the trip to Launceston to mark his 18th with his first sip of James Boag’s.
His parents chose his name after spotting a Boag’s advertisement on television while his mum was pregnant.
The timing couldn’t have been more perfect for settling Tasmania’s age-old debate between James Boag’s and Cascade drinkers.

“I haven’t even heard of the other one to be honest,” James said. “So I’d definitely say James Boag’s a lot better,” he told 7NEWS.
James travelled to the brewery with his godparents, who had been planning the moment for more than a decade.

“Ever since James was two, we kept saying to him, we’re taking you to James Boag’s and it’s unreal that we’re actually here,” his godmother told 7NEWS.
James Boag has been a Tasmanian institution since the brewery’s establishment in 1881, when Scottish immigrant James Boag founded the company that would become synonymous with the island’s culture.
