A Victorian tourist has been rescued after she injured her ankle while walking in heavy snow and ‘challenging conditions’ on a Tasmanian walking track yesterday afternoon.
The 28-year-old woman was retrieved from the Overland Track in the early hours of Monday morning after she activated her personal locator beacon around 5:30pm on Sunday.
Rescue crews reached her on foot in challenging weather conditions 8 hours later at 1:30am, where they spent the night at Kitchen Hut before safely assisting her out the next morning.
Sergeant Leighton Riggall said the woman was well prepared for her venture.
“She had appropriate equipment and food, and did all the right things, managing her injury appropriately while waiting for help,” he said.
“She registered her walk and added the details about her intended plans to her PLB registration, which helped us as emergency services to coordinate a response.”
“The weather was challenging overnight, with the rescue crew encountering wind, rain, snow and cold conditions.”
