Volunteer firefighters called to battle Christmas Day bushfire near New Norfolk

Volunteer firefighters have rushed away from their family Christmas lunches to battle a bushfire that broke out a short time ago on Back River Road at Magra.

Several fire trucks from the New Norfolk area and four helicopters have been dispatched to the fire.

The TFS say the blaze is around 2 hectares and expect crews to be there for much of the afternoon.

“Crews are currently on-site working to contain and bring the fire under control,” the TFS say.

“A water bombing helicopter is being used to assist with firefighting operations … The public are advised to keep well clear as the falling water has the potential to cause injury to anyone in the drop zone.”

“If there is any fire activity causing you concern please report it to the Tasmania Fire Service by calling triple zero (000).”
