The designs also include a gymnastics area, cafe, youth engagement, community education and counselling areas and multi-purpose office and community space.

$15 million in funding for the project will be provided by the federal government. $27.5 million from the state government and $1.1 million from the Launceston City Council.

Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said the Hub will be a modern recreation centre that will benefit the entire region, not just the northern suburbs.

“The City of Launceston is really proud to have committed to this transformational project, which is going to open up new social, economic, employment and recreational opportunities for our northern suburbs,” he said.

“This is a great example of where the community has asked and the council, state and federal governments have been able to work together to provide an awesome outcome.”

Labor Senator for Tasmania Helen Polley said the construction phase will create and support up to 230 jobs local jobs during construction.

“Vos Construction and Joinery sources 90% of its goods and services locally, which is why this is great news for Tasmania’s local economy,” she said.

The indoor complex is the first major one to be built in Launceston in nearly four decades.
