Tasmania’s Overland Track has been closed to all walkers as an out-of-control bushfire travels towards it.

A blaze that started as a result of dry lightning on Monday is burning just five kilometres away, authorities say.

Parks and Wildlife north-west regional manager Nic Deka said the fire near Canning Peak “grew significantly” overnight.

“Conditions are challenging and there is potential for the fire to impact the Overland Track within the next 24 to 48 hours,” he said on Wednesday at noon.

“Walkers scheduled to depart today have been stopped and those north of Windermere have been instructed to return to Cradle Valley.”

“This decision affects approximately 100 walkers.”

A watch and act warning is in place for the Windermere to Pine Forest Moor area, with the track set to stay closed for at least the next three days.

“Significant smoke from the fire is present in the area between Waterfall Valley and Pelion and anyone currently on the Overland Track is urged to follow instructions from track rangers,” Deka said.

“We are actively working to contain the fire and plan to reopen the track in three days’ time if conditions allow.”

Impacted walkers who secured a scarce booking for the track will be provided a full refund.
