Access to three wards at Launceston General Hospital has been restricted due to multiple reports of “gastroenteritis-like symptoms” among staff and patients.

The Department of Health issued a statement urging community members to “strongly reconsider” visiting the LGH emergency department.

Ward 3D, Ward 5D, and Ward 6D will be restricted for visitors until further notice.

An outbreak management team is currently reviewing the situation to ensure the safety of patients and staff.

Alternative options for medical care include Launceston after-hours GP services, the urgent care clinic at Launceston Medical Centre, pharmacies, or contacting Healthdirect on 1800 022 222 for free advice.

In case of emergencies, people are advised to call triple zero (000) or go to the LGH emergency department.

This is not the first time the LGH has experienced a gastro outbreak, as several wards were closed during the winter of 2021.
