An “oversized vehicle” that struck an overhead sprinkler in the Argyle Street carpark has sent streams of water gushing from the Hobart CBD building.

The incident at around 12:30pm on Friday temporarily restricted access to the carpark for about 30 minutes.

It also prompted a brief closure of the Wellington Centre and a response from two fire trucks.

A loud siren shrieking “emergency” and “evacuate now” sounded from the carpark and was heard around the city for 10 minutes.

City of Hobart CEO Michael Stretton told Pulse a vehicle exceeding the height restriction of 2.2 metres damaged the sprinkler, disrupting operations.

“We remind all users to follow vehicle height restrictions to help ensure the safe and smooth operation of the facility,” he said.

“The matter has now been resolved and the carpark is working at normal capacity.”
