Water restrictions could be on the horizon for residents in the east coast towns of Orford and Triabunna as dam levels begin to fall.

TasWater’s General Manager of Customer and Community Matt Balfe said the Prosser River has “essentially stopped flowing” into the dams that supply the area.

“Without significant rain and if community usage does not decrease, we may need to move to water restrictions to help manage supply,” he said.

Balfe said they will have a better indication in the next two weeks whether restrictions will be required.

He said water levels in other areas of the state are also being monitored, including the St Patricks River at Distillery Creek in Launceston, which is “a bit lower than we’d like”.

“On Flinders Island, water level is at 89% in the Henderson Dam at Whitemark,” he said.

“This puts it in a much better position than last year, but we are keeping a close eye on it.”

“It might seem like there is plenty of water around the state, but that is not the
case.”

“Small changes to water usage, like taking shorter showers and using the half-flush on the toilet, add up to have a huge impact on water supplies.”
