Temperatures could dip below zero in parts of Tasmania this weekend, with the island state in for one of its chilliest bursts of weather so far this year.
The Bureau of Meteorology is tipping widespread frost, plunging temperatures and even snow at lower elevations as a cold front rolls in from the southwest.
Maximum temperatures are expected to barely reach the low teens on Saturday and Sunday, with Sunday morning likely to bring the most widespread frost.
The wintry blast comes hot on the heels of Tasmania’s driest April in a decade.

On Thursday, overnight temperatures dropped to minus one in Cressy, Fingal and Ross, icing up parts of the Northern Midlands and Fingal Valley.
According to the latest forecast from the BOM, Friday will see showers extending to the far south in the evening and snow falling to 900 metres in the south.

Winds will shift from the west to the south-west later in the day as the front moves through.
By Saturday, things will turn even colder. Showers are on the cards for the west, south and far north-east, with snow possible down to around 500 metres.
The north can expect patchy frost and fog in the morning and chilly south-westerly winds throughout the day.
Sunday will bring mainly fine conditions but widespread morning frost across the state.
