Tasmanians are being told to batten down the hatches with damaging winds of up to 100km/h set to lash the state’s east coast on Monday.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning, saying damaging northwesterly winds are expected to develop from early tomorrow.

They will spread to lower-lying coastal areas by late morning, with winds averaging 55 to 65km/h and gusts reaching 100km/h before conditions ease by late afternoon.

Coastal towns including Bicheno and Fingal are in the firing line, the bureau says.

The bureau is warning residents to secure loose outdoor furniture and avoid travel in exposed areas, with the potential for fallen trees, power outages and property damage.
