Will Magnay has been handed the captaincy of the Tasmania JackJumpers by his teammates, with foundation skipper Clint Steindl stepping aside.
The 26-year-old, a stalwart since the JackJumpers’ NBL debut, will lead the club into the 2025–26 season with veteran guard Anthony Drmic as his deputy.
Magnay’s promotion comes fresh off captaining the Boomers to gold at last month’s FIBA Asia Cup in Saudi Arabia, adding international leadership credentials to his résumé.
“It’s an incredible honour to be named captain of this club,” Magnay said.

“Tasmania means a lot to me and to be trusted to lead this group of guys and represent this state in that way is something I take very seriously.”
The leadership change was decided by a player vote after the team’s NBL Blitz campaign, with Steindl personally delivering the news to the squad on Wednesday night.

For Magnay, receiving the role from his long-time teammate made the moment especially meaningful.
“For him to pass down to me was really cool and a moment I never thought I would cherish things like that, but I really do,” he said.
The centre believes his recent international experience will hold him in good stead.
“I really learnt to keep a cool head when the other [Boomers] guys were looking to me in tough moments,” Magnay said.

Drmic, who joined the JackJumpers in 2022–23, said being chosen by teammates gave the appointment extra weight.
“I think it’s a cool way to do captaincy, having the players vote because those are the guys you go to war with and they get to pick their leaders,” he said.
The new leadership duo will face their first test when the JackJumpers host Melbourne United in their season opener at MyState Bank Arena on September 18.
