Wind gusts near 100km/h as Tasmania’s north warned of severe weather

Parts of Tasmania’s north are on high alert for damaging winds as a strong cold front approaches the state.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for King Island, the Furneaux Islands and areas of the north-east, north and north-west coast.

Forecasters say the front is expected to bring west to northwesterly winds averaging 60 to 70km/h with peak gusts of around 100km/h this afternoon.

The winds are likely to impact the northern coastline from Devonport eastwards, including the Bass Strait Islands.

“Winds are expected to shift west to southwesterly following the passage of the front, with the risk of damaging winds easing by this evening,” the BOM said.

“Locations which may be affected include Devonport, Currie, George Town, Whitemark and Bridport.”

A 98km/h wind gust was recorded at Cape Grim shortly before 10am and a 72km/h gust in Wynyard at 10:02am.
