Windy weather: Gale warnings in place for Tasmania as winds hit 120km/h

Tasmanians have woken up to a wild morning of windy weather, with gale force winds battering most of the state’s coastline.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued gale warnings for the far North-West Coast, Banks Strait and Franklin Sound, East of Flinders Island, Upper East Coast, Lower East Coast, South East Coast, South West Coast and Central West Coast.

Strong wind warnings are in place for the South West Lakes and Central North Coast.

The weather bureau has predicted the strong conditions will continue into Friday, with gale warnings forecast for the Far North West Coast, South West Coast and Central West Coast.

Hobart’s kunanyi/Mt Wellington recorded the highest wind gust of 120km/h at 6:36am this morning, while the city reached 74km/h at 9:07am.

Gusts hit 96km/h at Maria Island on the east coast, 102km/h at Mount Read, 82km/h at Low Head and 80km/h at Devonport Airport.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting showers for the north and west of the state over the next few days, with snow expected to fall above 900 metres on Thursday and Friday and above 500 metres over the weekend.

Showers mainly about the north and west, becoming mainly about the west, far south and Bass Strait Islands during the morning, then falling as snow to 500 metres later in the evening. Fresh and gusty northwesterly winds, shifting westerly in the morning then tending southwesterly in the evening.

Sunday 28 July
Scattered showers about the west and far south, falling as snow to near 500 metres. Southwesterly winds tending west to northwesterly later in the day.
