People at Discovery Parks Cradle Mountain also confirmed snowfall at Lake St Clair, saying it was “still falling” when they woke up.

The cold front is expected to persist throughout the middle of the week according to meteorologists, with the snow line gradually rising over coming days.

“Showers about the west and Bass Strait Islands, falling as snow to 800 metres during the morning, rising to above 1000 metres by the afternoon,” the BoM forecast for Tuesday indicates.

By Wednesday, snow is expected to fall around the 800-metre level, with showers clearing for a period during the day before returning in the evening, particularly in western areas.

The cold system is being driven by “a southwesterly airstream behind a cold front” which is expected to “gradually shift westerly during today, persisting throughout the middle of the week, with embedded troughs or cold fronts moving in from the west at times,” according to the bureau.
