Woman charged after allegedly taking drugs into Tasmanian prison

A woman visiting Hobart’s Risdon Prison has been charged after allegedly being caught with illicit substances during a visit with an inmate.

Police said the 43-year-old “professional visitor” was intercepted on Friday while carrying out an “authorised meeting” at the prison.

She faces two counts of possessing a controlled drug and two counts of unlawfully taking an unauthorised item into a prison.

The type of drugs involved and details of the woman’s work have not yet been released.

Professional visitors usually include lawyers, social workers, counsellors and other service providers who have authorised access to correctional facilities.

The woman is due to appear in Hobart Magistrates Court at a later date.
