Work will start today on a new park and ride facility in Midway Point, designed to transform commuter options for residents travelling into Hobart.

Located between Fenton Street and the Tasman Highway, the project will offer free parking and link commuters to future express bus services heading into the CBD.

Construction crews are moving onto the site this morning, with the Department of State Growth expecting the facility to be completed by October.

Once finished, the park and ride will include 59 standard car spaces, two accessible spots, five motorcycle bays, secure bike storage and weather-protected bus shelters.

A reduced speed limit will be in place on Fenton Street during construction, with work happening from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and occasionally on Saturdays.

The Midway Point facility is one of several park and ride projects planned across greater Hobart, with similar developments on the way for Claremont and Rokeby.

The project has been in the pipeline for a number of years, with community consultation on the design wrapping up back in 2022.

According to State Growth, park and ride facilities “provide opportunities for public transport users to cycle, walk, or travel by car to a facility with dedicated commuter parking close to key bus routes”.
