When officers arrived, the driver accelerated away, police said.

The 20-year-old north-west man was found shortly after near the intersection of Bass Highway and Russ Street.

His Toyota Hilux had slammed into a parked vehicle.

He was arrested at the scene and taken to North-West Regional Hospital with injuries. He was discharged later the same day.

The crash caused significant traffic disruption, with a westbound lane of the Bass Highway blocked for about four hours.

A police spokesperson said crash investigation and forensic services attended the scene.

“… Investigations are continuing, including if speed and alcohol were contributing factors to the crash,” the spokesperson said.

“The man will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.”

Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

“Police urge anyone who witnessed a flat tray Toyota Hilux being driven erratically in Burnie on Thursday morning or may have dashcam or CCTV footage to contact them on 131 444,” the spokesperson said.
