A weekend of reckless driving across Launceston has left several young motorists without their cars and facing hefty fines, as Tasmania Police ramp up their crackdown on hoons in the city centre.

A 21-year-old P-plater from Bishopsbourne had his Holden Colorado clamped for 28 days after he was caught pulling multiple slides around corners in the Launceston CBD on Friday night.

Police arrested the driver on the spot and his ute will stay off the road until late June.

Friday night proved especially busy for officers, with a 32-year-old man from Longford also losing his motorcycle after performing a “wheel stand and fish-tail” manoeuvre down York Street.

A young female P-plater completely wrote off her car that same night after crashing during handbrake slides in wet conditions at Invermay.

The crackdown continued into Saturday night, when a 17-year-old from St Leonards had his vehicle declared unroadworthy due to serious defects, including bald tyres.

He was also slapped with more than $600 in fines for carrying too many passengers.

In another incident, a 19-year-old P-plater is set to be fined after losing control and crashing his car into a church on Paterson Street.

The chaos wasn’t limited to the weekend. On Thursday night, a 17-year-old from Carrick was arrested after allegedly evading police and driving recklessly in South Launceston.

Police said his car was confiscated for six months.

“If you see unlawful and dangerous driving behaviour, report it to police at the time by calling 131 444. In an emergency call Triple Zero,” police said.
