Tasmanian bus users will soon be able to take advantage of modern and comfortable bus shelters, thanks to a Government All-access All-weather Bus Stop Upgrade Grant Program.

The program, which will distribute up to $10 million among local councils in Tasmania, aims to improve access to public transport for people with disabilities and families with children using strollers, as well as older Tasmanians.

Priority for upgrades will be determined in collaboration with local government and will be based on factors such as patronage levels and the proximity of health facilities and businesses to the bus stop.

Acting Premier and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Michael Ferguson, said this is the single largest injection of funding for this infrastructure.

“There are some 3,500 bus stops in Tasmania – ranging from city centre locations to remote rural settings,” Minister Ferguson said.

“Anyone wanting to nominate a local bus stop for upgrade should contact their local council.”
