Works have officially begun on the installation of 11 new Variable Message Signs around greater Hobart following the successful trial launch of two signs on the Tasman Highway near Hobart Airport.
The electronic screens display real-time travel times to key destinations, alongside information about crashes, changes in weather or unplanned incidents.
The Department of State Growth says the signs that will be installed over the coming months will help motorists “make informed decisions about their travel”.
Reduced speed limits and nighttime lane closures are currently in place on the Southern Outlet, Brooker Highway and Tasman Highway as works to build the footings for the billboard gantries begin.

It is hoped all billboards will be online by November, with work currently underway in the Hobart-bound lanes of the Southern Outlet, the Brooker Highway Hobart-bound lanes near the Hockey Centre and Berriedale overpass.
Work will start on the Kingston-bound sign on the Huon Highway just before the Southern Outlet, Tasman Highway between Cambridge Road and South Arm Road between Merrindah Street and Wicks Place later this month.
