Two teenagers are set to face court over a string of what are believed to be deliberately lit fires in West Ulverstone last month.

A 16-year-old has been charged with arson for allegedly torching the scoreboard at the Amy Street Recreation Ground on May 11.

The blaze completely destroyed the scoreboard.

A 12-year-old will also be charged for allegedly lighting a separate fire in bushland within the West Ulverstone area.

Detective Acting Inspector Alex Bonde said police had been following a specific line of enquiry and would like to thank the local community for their assistance.

“The scoreboard fire forms part of a larger investigation into fires being lit in the West Ulverstone area in recent times,” he said.

“Deliberately setting fires is a reckless and dangerous act that puts lives at risk and causes considerable damage to property.”

“It also places an unnecessary strain on our emergency services. People who deliberately lights fires will be held accountable for their actions.”

“We understand the concern this has caused within the community and we urge people to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police.”
