Tasmania Police have seized 13 firearms from a rural property in the state’s north after a “routine inspection” uncovered a string of alleged compliance breaches by a licensed gun owner.

The inspection, carried out last week, found two loaded firearms on the property, including one that was not registered.

Officers also found ammunition stored outside an approved safe and allege the property did not have a working electronic security device, as required under firearms laws.

A total of 13 firearms were seized, including a mix of rifles and shotguns.

A 65-year-old man will be proceeded against by way of summons and his firearms licence is now under review.

Tasmania Police said officers regularly carry out firearms storage and compliance inspections to make sure licence holders are doing the right thing.

“When firearms are not stored securely or licence conditions are not followed, it increases the risk of firearms falling into the wrong hands,” police said.

“Firearms licence holders who are unsure of their safekeeping or storage obligations are encouraged to speak with their local police station or contact firearms services.”
