Two 14 and 15-year-old teenagers have been charged after they crashed a stolen car ‘headfirst’ into a sign on the East Derwent Highway last night.
The 15-year-old, who was driving the stolen blue Hyundai, was allegedly under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash.
Police say both youths fled the scene, only to be arrested by officers shortly after.
The pair have since been charged with motor vehicle stealing, with the young driver also expected to be charged with drug driving and other traffic offences.
They will appear in the Hobart Youth Justice Courts at a later date.
Inspector Andrew Keane thanked the members of the public who reported the crash and assisted in police.
‘It is very disappointing that a small group of recidivist juvenile offenders continue to put the public in harms way,” he said.
“It was only chance that the intersection was empty at the time, or the crash could have been far more serious.”
