A young driver caught hurtling down the East Tamar Highway at 63km/h above the speed limit has been slapped with a fine and a four-month driving ban.
The 18-year-old from George Town was stopped by police on the highway at Dilston while travelling at 163km/h in the 100km/h zone.
Sergeant Fergus Cameron said the “inexperienced” teenager was accompanied by three other young passengers at the time.
“Speeding continues to be a major contributing factor in serious and fatal crashes on our roads,” he said.
“Police will continue to patrol our roads to keep our community safe and importantly, we can be anywhere at any time.”
The teenage boys infringement notice will total $1,161.
“I urge all motorists to slow down and obey the speed limit,” Cameron said.
