Launceston is set for a major sporting upgrade with the state government committing an additional $18.8 million to expand the new Northern Suburbs Community Recreation Hub in Mowbray.

The Stage 3 expansion will add four more indoor courts to the facility, bringing the total to 11 courts and expanding the usable indoor space to approximately 15,000 square metres.

Sport Minister Nick Duigan said the re-allocation of funds will ensure northern communities have access to the facilities they need “for generations to come”.

“Basketball is one of the fastest growing sports in Tasmania and these additional courts will provide more opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get involved.”

The expansion will also include additional car parking and accessibility features, addressing the increasing demand for indoor sports infrastructure in northern Tasmania.

Construction of the Hub has already passed the 65% completion mark, with enabling works finished to allow for faster delivery of the new courts.

The Hub will have a total of 11 indoor courts after the expansion

Federal Member for Bass Jess Teesdale, who grew up playing basketball in Launceston, said the expansion is significant.

“For too long, demand has outstripped capacity, and this expansion means more kids, families and clubs can get a game,” Teesdale said.

“This Hub is about more than sport; it’s about helping people live healthier, more active lives, creating pathways for young people and giving everyone the chance to be part of a team.”

The project’s total funding now stands at $62.4 million, with contributions from multiple levels of government.

Additional car parking and accessibility features will be included in the expansion

The federal government has committed $15 million, the state government $46.3 million, and the City of Launceston $1.1 million.

The facility is set to open in early 2026.
