Repairs of the Glenorchy Memorial Pool are becoming ‘increasingly unlikely’, with a council report revealing that it would take two years and a significant financial investment to fix the facility.

The pool was closed earlier this month after it was found to be unsafe, with a number of problems from a fault in the pool shell, to grandstand structural issues and electrical upgrades found.

Glenorchy Council mayor Bec Thomas said the 60-year-old pool “has served its community extremely well over the last 60 years.”

“Based on this report, there was no option but to keep the pool closed. We cannot risk the safety of the public or the people who staff the facility,” she said.

The mayor said the council had explored various repair options and costs, with the cheapest option at $1.3 million providing only temporary fixes, while spending $5.1 million on major upgrades would extend the pool’s life by around five years.

Completely transforming the pool into a modern setup would require around $30 million.

The pool is currently costing Glenorchy ratepayers $400,000 a year to maintain and had fewer than 100 swimmers use the pool each day during its last six-month season.

The council will table the report at a meeting on Monday night.
