A new container refund depot has opened in Glenorchy, giving residents in Hobart’s northern suburbs another convenient place to cash in their bottles and cans.
The reverse vending machine at Glenorchy Central is the 45th refund point under Tasmania’s Recycle Rewards scheme, which launched in May.
The program has quickly gained traction in the south. The nearby Claremont depot is now the state’s third-busiest, while Goodwood is one of the fastest-growing sites.
TasRecycle CEO Ken Roughley said Glenorchy was chosen because locals were already showing strong support for recycling.

“Glenorchy residents have really embraced Recycle Rewards,” he said.
Users get 10 cents per container, either deposited into their bank account or donated to community groups.

Since the scheme began, more than 42 million containers have been returned statewide.
Devonport currently holds the title of Tasmania’s busiest refund point, followed by Cove Hill and Claremont in the south and Mowbray in the north.
More refund points are set to open across the state in the lead-up to summer.
Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey said the initiative was a win on multiple fronts.

“It’s a win for your wallet and a win for the planet,” she said.
“Recycle Rewards helps reduce litter, increase recycling and supports our local community groups.”
