A Police drug detector dog has foiled a Claremont mans attempt to allegedly bring in around $5.5 million worth of illegal drugs into Tasmania last night.
The 32-year-old was intercepted during routine drug screening after arriving from Sydney at around 8pm, with a subsequent search of the man’s luggage revealing 2kgs of cocaine and 3.5kgs of methylamphetamine.
The man has been arrested, detained and charged with trafficking in a controlled substance to appear in court today.
The Tasmania Police sniffer dogs, who were heading for retirement, detected a strong scent coming from the check-in luggage of a passenger during a routine check at the Hobart Airport.
Australian Federal Police Sergeant Nick Gibson said whilte it’s possible that the officers would have been able to locate the drugs ‘even without the assistance of drug detection dogs’, the canines offered a ‘distinct advantage’ by being able to effectively detect the illegal cargo through their powerful sense of smell.
