A five-hour traffic operation on the Bass Highway has landed around 50 drivers in trouble with authorities.
Senior Sergeant Darren Woolley said the setup between Burnie and Penguin on Wednesday intercepted over 700 vehicles and caught 19 drivers speeding.
Seven of the offending drivers were exceeding the speed limit by between 15km/h and 29km/h.
“In the operation, police also caught two people driving unlicensed, one person tested positive for drugs and another six drivers were issued infringements for seatbelt and inattention offences,” he said.
“18 vehicle defect notices were also issued for various matters, including cracked windscreens, bald tyres and faulty lights.”
“Unfortunately, despite widespread awareness of the risks, many drivers continue to underestimate the potential consequences of speeding.”
