“I’m guilty, Your Honour”: Nearly two years after her death, the man accused of killing Hobart mum Rachel Wake has changed his plea to guilty.
Wake, aged just 52 at the time, was allegedly stabbed multiple times in front of her kids on Christmas Day in 2021 and passed away in the Royal Hobart Hospital later that day.
Her former husband, Darren Mark Wake, initially pleaded not guilty to the murder charge but changed his plea in the Supreme Court in Hobart on Monday.
Mr Wake has been remanded in custody to face court again in February.
Family members and supporters have expressed their relief following the guilty plea, with a Facebook post on the page Rachel’s Voice reading ‘He changed his plea to guilty’.
“This afternoon we were back in court once again. But today was different. After 717 days of waiting, begging, and fighting for my mum, we got the most incredible news,” the post read.
“The fight has only just begun.”
In 2021, police arrived at the house in Mornington to find Ms Wake still alive but with critical wounds to her chest.
At the time, Police said two teenage children were present but unharmed during the incident.
Mr Wake initially pleaded not guilty to the murder charge, delaying the case for plea deal negotiations that have taken place over the past two years.
