All Tasmania water restrictions lifted after Lady Barron eased

All water restrictions across Tasmania have been lifted after stage 1 restrictions at Lady Barron on Flinders Island were removed.

The restrictions had been in place for the past five months.

Recent rainfall has replenished local groundwater supplies, allowing the restrictions to be removed.

TasWater Head of Communications and Engagement Liz Hafner thanked residents for their efforts in conserving water and said it was important for locals and visitors to remain water wise.

“The community is serviced by an underground bore system which takes longer to recover than our systems supplied via run of river or dam storage,” Hafner said.

“We are pleased to see the recovery in groundwater levels and hopeful more favourable rainfall, on the outlook over the coming weeks, will see further improvements.”

She said water systems around the state had recovered following a drier than usual summer and autumn but warned Tasmanians not to be complacent.

“The Bureau of Meteorology is closely monitoring the possibility of an El Niño system in the coming months, which would mean drier than normal conditions, warmer temperatures and increased pressure on our water systems,” Hafner said.

Water restrictions ended in Orford and Triabunna, Oatlands, Scamander and Whitemark in June.

TasWater monitors 58 water catchments across the state and introduces restrictions when levels drop to ensure essential water needs can be met.

Hafner encouraged Tasmanians to make simple changes to their daily habits to save water year-round.

“Saving water doesn’t have to be complicated, a few simple changes to your daily habits, can make a big difference,” she said.
