Tasmanians with allergies are being told to prepare for a potentially strong summer pollen season, with experts predicting grass pollen levels will be higher than in recent years.

The AirRater Service, a joint venture between AirHealth and the University of Tasmania’s Menzies Institute for Medical Research, says grass pollen is the primary trigger for respiratory allergies, including hay fever and asthma.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting above-median rainfall for eastern Tasmania this spring, which, coupled with enhanced soil moisture levels, may lead to more grass growth and subsequent pollen release as warmer weather sets in.

“The variability in this year’s weather patterns means that some regions in Tasmania could see higher pollen levels than usual, especially if wet conditions continue,” University of Tasmania researcher Dr Grant Williamson said.

“It’s important for people with hay fever and asthma to be prepared and stay informed about the pollen levels in their specific areas.”

AirHealth’s Dr Edwin Lampugnani advises Tasmanians to use available tools to stay informed about current environmental conditions, including pollen levels.

“Knowing the conditions allows you to make better decisions, helping to reduce your pollen exposure during daily activities,” he said.
