Antarctic expeditioner in Royal Hobart Hospital after rescue mission

An Australian Antarctic Division expeditioner who fell ill while on a mission in Antarctica has returned safely to Hobart.

The rescue was carried out by the icebreaker RSV Nuyina, which travelled over 6,500km and took more than two weeks to complete the round trip to the frozen continent.

The expeditioner, whose identity and condition have not been disclosed, has been transferred to the Royal Hobart Hospital for specialist assessment and care after being evacuated from the research station.

During the week-long trip, the expeditioner was cared for in the icebreaker’s special medical facility by doctors and nursing staff from the RHH.

The icebreaker is now preparing to return to Antarctica for the upcoming summer season.
