A Bob Brown Foundation ‘forest defender’ has been arrested at a logging site in southern Tasmania while attempting to save the endangered Swift parrot.
A 63-year-old woman was taken into custody on Thursday morning and charged after she allegedly chained herself to a gate at the Kermandie Divide logging site.
The Nubeena woman was charged with failing to comply with directions of a police officer.
She will appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court on December 20.
9 protesters were given a formal notice to leave the logging area by police and will be issued a summons notice for alleged trespass.
“Thursday’s protest is in forests that the swift parrot is occupying during the breeding season. We are in coupe KD022C where our foundation has recorded Swift parrots more than 20 times inside the coupe boundary,” Bob Brown Foundation campaigner Erik Hayward said.
“The first one on September 28 before the logging and parrots have been consistently recorded since then.”
Sustainable Timber Tasmania has previously stated that a detailed planning process, involving the collaboration of a local ornithologist, was used for the logging site.
They said it had ‘been confirmed’ that there is no foraging habitat within the coupe, however there are some potential nesting trees which have been excluded from harvesting.
