Tasmanian dairy producer Ashgrove has partnered with Triabunna-based Sea Forest to launch what they’re touting as the world’s first ‘low-emission milk’.

Now available on the shelves of Woolworths, Coles and IGA supermarkets across Tasmania, Ashgrove claims that their new Eco-Milk provides “the full cream milk experience” while reducing methane emissions by up to 25%.

Sea Forest, recently recognised as one of the world’s most innovative companies, developed the groundbreaking feed derived from native red seaweed behind the emissions reductions.

SEAFEED is integrated into Ashgrove’s cows’ diet and is designed to reduce methane emissions from livestock by up to 90%.

The new Eco-Milk is available in Tasmanian supermarkets.

AshGrove Managing Director Richard Bennett says the seaweed has the natural ability to potentially halve the amount of methane emitted by Ashgrove’s contented herd during burping.

“Ashgrove is proud to be at the forefront of this global challenge, offering a solution rooted in Tasmanian innovation,” he said.

“Eco-Milk embodies our unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and community well-being.”

According to the 2022 State Greenhouse Gas Emissions Report, agriculture contributes to 34% of Tasmania’s total emissions.

Sea Forest’s CEO Sam Elsom suggests that their product could potentially reduce the dairy industry’s overall greenhouse gas footprint by an estimated 30%.

“This pioneering collaboration demonstrates the potential of our methane-mitigating feed product … to revolutionise the dairy industry globally,” he said.

“We are committed to working with partners like Ashgrove to expand this technology and empower consumers worldwide to make sustainable choices while enjoying delicious and nutritious milk.”
