Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds has been cleared of an assault charge relating to an alleged incident with now councillor Louise Elliot today.

The charge, stemming from a public meeting last year regarding the University of Tasmania’s move into the Hobart CBD, was dropped by police after a review of the file by the Department’s Principal Legal Officer.

Ms Reynolds denied the allegation of common assault and was set to defend the charges in court.

However, the matter will now not proceed following the discontinuation of the charge.

“A charge of common assault against a 56-year-old Hobart woman will be discontinued following a review of the file by the Department’s Principal Legal Officer,” a Police spokesperson said in a statement.

“The review included consideration of additional witness statements.”

“It was then determined the matter would be discontinued. It is not appropriate to provide further comment.”
