A tiny Eastern Barred Bandicoot joey that survived a ‘tragic lawnmower accident’ that took the lives of her mother and siblings is being cared for at a Hobart wildlife centre this weekend.

Named “Gidget” by the Bonorong Wildlife Centre rescue team, they say the Bandicoot managed to come out of the incident with only minor injuries.

“She was very lucky to escape the ordeal with only a minor scratch behind her ear. She was then able to be sent in to care after a full examination by our vet team,” a spokesperson for the wildlife centre said.

The centre has used Gidget’s story to encourage homeowners to keep their yards maintained to prevent such accidents from happening to other animals.

“Keeping your yard short and tidy will not only look great, but will discourage wildlife from making a home where they may be injured by gardening tools,” advised the team.
