A Tasmanian Aboriginal centre has been the target of what is believed to be a deliberate attack over the long weekend.

A “Bark Hut” outside of the South East Tasmanian Aboriginal Corporation (SETAC) in Cygnet went up in flames in the early hours of Sunday morning, with the blaze also destroying a nearby fence.

The corporation says the fire started just after 2:30am.

“This Bark Hut was lovingly created by Aboriginal Families and demonstrated the ongoing connection to culture and each other,” SETAC said.

“No matter how it happened, this wasn’t just destroying something of SETACs, but something that the families involved created together.”

They are now calling on anyone with further information to pass it on to the police.

“Regardless of whether this was a targeted attack, over the Invasion Day weekend, or a simple accident, if you have any further information, please contact the Police.”

In a statement to Pulse, Tasmania Police confirmed the fire was “suspicious” and said it was under investigation.
