Huon Valley on flood watch as heavy rain, strong winds persist

Parts of the Huon Valley are on flood watch tonight as heavy rain continues to fall across the region.

A minor flood warning has been issued for the Huon River, with river level rises and areas of flooding likely around Harrisons Opening overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning.

The Picton River is also likely to experience river level rises overnight, while minor flooding may occur along the Huon River from Tahune to Judbury.

The Huon River at Tahune Bridge was at 1.23 metres and steady, the BOM said, below the minor flood level of 4 metres.

It is predicted to reach the minor flood level on Wednesday morning with forecast rainfall.

Minor flooding is also possible along the Huon River around Huonville, with the river currently at 2.4 metres and steady, below the minor flood level of 3 metres.

“The Huon River at Huonville may reach the minor flood level Wednesday afternoon on the high tide,” the BOM said.

“Some low-lying properties may become isolated by flood waters. Property, livestock, equipment and crops in low lying areas may be at risk from flood waters.”

“Driving conditions may be dangerous. Flood waters are a risk to safety, never walk, play, ride or drive in floodwater.”
