Tasmania Zoo has farewelled one of its most cherished residents, announcing the death of 18-year-old lion Megalou after a sudden health decline.
Zoo staff and veterinarians made the “very difficult decision” to euthanase Megalou late last week when his condition rapidly worsened.
Megalou had called the zoo home for the past decade.
“It’s with a heavy heart that we share the passing of one of our beloved lion boys,” the zoo shared online.
“Megalou lived to the grand old age of 18 and we have been honoured to have him as a cherished part of our zoo family.”

News of his death sparked an outpouring of grief, with many visitors sharing fond memories and tributes.
“All the love and support to all Megalou’s carers at Tasmania Zoo,” one visitor shared online.
“The toughest part of the job is saying goodbye to the ones we care for.”
Another recalled meeting him recently: “We met Megalou with your wonderful staff on August 19th. What an incredible boy!”
“The love, care and respect he was shown was very obvious,” they added.

The zoo said Megalou had also contributed to raising awareness about protecting wildlife
“As we reflect on his life, we celebrate the joy he brought to so many and the important role he played in raising awareness about wildlife conservation,” the zoo said.
“His legacy will live on in our efforts to protect and preserve the natural world.”
