Big spike in power outages as weather conditions deteriorate again across Tasmania

A sudden spike in properties without power has forced Tasmania Police to issue a warning to motorists as conditions deteriorate across the state.

In the last two hours, the number of homes and businesses affected by outages has jumped from 11,000 to 24,000.

Images shared to social media show trees across roads and power lines fallen in suburban areas of Launceston since 10pm on Sunday.

Police say trees are falling in suburban and semi-rural areas, particularly in the north of the state, due to the weather.

Areas impacted include St Leonards, Mowbray, Breadalbane, Exeter, Summerhill, Ravenswood, Hadspen, Burnie and Wynyard.

“Police are urging motorists to use caution in those areas and if possible delay their travel,” a spokesperson said.

“Current information regarding road closures and road hazards can be accessed via the Tasmania Police website.”

Many parts of Kings Meadows, Newstead, Beaconsfield, Devonport and Ulverstone are the latest to be thrown back into the dark with new power outages.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast heavy rain and strong winds to continue to impact much of the state.

Several flood warnings remain in place.
