A severe weather warning has been issued for much of Tasmania’s south and west as damaging wind gusts develop over the state this afternoon.
The Bureau of Meteorology is closely monitoring a deep low in the Southern Ocean and a high-pressure system in the Great Australian Bight, which they say will “increase the pressure gradient” over the state today.
“Damaging wind gusts of around 100km/h are likely to develop across the elevated areas of the southwest and central west of the state this afternoon, extending to lower elevation areas southwest of Hobart as well, before extending to the Tasman Peninsula later this evening,” the BOM are warning.
“Gusts in excess of 110km/h are possible over the higher peaks of the southwest and Western Tiers.”
Strathgordon, New Norfolk, Tarraleah, Geeveston, Dover and Huonville are all expected to be affected.
Advice from the State Emergency Service (SES) includes securing outdoor items, such as furniture and play equipment, and exercising caution around damaged trees and power lines while driving.
