A frustrated mayor has labelled the actions of vandals “braindead” after a late-night attack on public toilets left the facilities unsafe and forced their sudden closure.
Derwent Valley Mayor Michelle Dracoulis said the Arthur Square toilets in New Norfolk sustained “significant damage” during the incident on Thursday night.
“This braindead act of violence will impact locals, High Street businesses, tourists and the New Norfolk Market,” Dracoulis said.
The toilets have been shut while repairs are carried out, with photos showing several holes apparently kicked into the walls.

Dracoulis described the destruction as the work of “the few and the selfish”.
“I thank you for your patience while council works to restore what’s been taken from us all,” she said.
Anyone with information about the vandalism is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
